Teaching Letter Recognition : The Baby Steps
Because altogether there are 52 letters symbol, and this might overwhelm beginning learners, we bite-sized them.
Start with having your kids identify the same case letters.
Step 1: Lowercase Letters to Lowercase Letters
For example, identifying the lowercase letters to lowercase letters.
The activity would look like the below.
This activity is simple, it’s like finding the same shape, or finding the same picture.
Doing letter recognition activities help your kids to get familiar with the ABC symbols.
Step 2: Uppercase Letters to Uppercase Letters
Next, we do the uppercase to uppercase letter recognition activities.
The activity would look like this one below.
You can switch between starting with ‘uppercase to uppercase letters’ letter recognition or ‘lowercase to lowercase letters’.
Once your little learners are getting used to see the letter symbol, slowly introduce the concept of uppercase-lowercase letter pair.
Step 3: Lowercase Letters to Uppercase Letters (and vice versa)
The way I introduce this concept to my kids is, using the mom-and-baby letters.
Then we’d visit our alphabet chart that shows both uppercase and lowercase letters in one place.
I’d say that every and each ABC letter has a mom and a baby.
The uppercase letter is the mommy.
The lowercase letter is the baby letter.
In the uppercase-lowercase letter activity, we’ll be doing an activity of looking for the pair of mom-and-baby letters.
So far this concept works great!
With fun practices and activities, eventually my kids know the uppercase and lowercase pairs like the back of their hands.
You don’t have to drill your kids, just make it simple with the 3 steps above, and voila! it will click!
